Thousands of travelers across Germany have found themselves stranded

Passengers walk through a terminal at the airport in Frankfurt, Germany on Tuesday

On Tuesday, thousands of travelers in Germany were left stranded due to a walkout by ground staff at seven major airports in the country.

The Ver.di labor union, responsible for the strike, began the one-day action that will continue until 7:10 am on Wednesday.

The strike has affected several hundred flights at Frankfurt and Munich airports, which are Lufthansa’s main hubs, along with airports in Berlin, Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne-Bonn, and Stuttgart.

This strike is one of several similar actions in the transportation industry this year, as unions demand better working conditions and higher wages due to inflation and staff shortages.

Short “warning strikes” are a common negotiation tactic in Germany. However, they have frustrated travelers and commuters, making Germany, Europe’s economic powerhouse, appear dysfunctional.
